What are Conjunctions?
Learn all about conjunctions, their types, and how to use them effectively in English grammar. Clear definitions, examples, and practice tips included.
Conjunctions are words that link other words, phrases, or clauses together. They act like bridges in a sentence, connecting ideas so that writing and speech flow smoothly. Without conjunctions, communication would feel broken and disconnected.
Example:
-
I like tea and coffee.
-
She studied hard because she wanted to pass.
Types of Conjunctions
1. Coordinating Conjunctions
These connect words, phrases, or clauses of equal importance. The most common are: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.
A simple way to remember them is with the acronym FANBOYS.
Examples:
-
I wanted to play football, but it was raining.
-
You can take the bus, or you can walk.
2. Subordinating Conjunctions
These connect a dependent clause to an independent clause. They show relationships such as cause, time, condition, or contrast. Common ones include: because, although, since, unless, while, if.
Examples:
-
She stayed home because it was raining.
-
I will call you when I arrive.
3. Correlative Conjunctions
These come in pairs and work together to join equal elements. Examples include: both...and, either...or, neither...nor, not only...but also.
Examples:
-
Both the teacher and the students were excited.
-
She is not only smart but also hardworking.
Why are Conjunctions Important?
Conjunctions make sentences more expressive and flexible. They help us avoid repetition and create complex, meaningful ideas. Imagine speaking without them it would feel like listing words instead of communicating thoughts.
Example without conjunctions:
-
I like apples. I like oranges.
Example with conjunctions:
-
I like apples and oranges.
Practice Tip
